Multisymplectic Theory of Balance Systems and the Entropy Principle

چکیده
In this paper we are presenting the theory of balance equations of the Continuum Thermodynamics (balance systems) in a geometrical form using Poincare-Cartan formalism of the Multisymplectic Field Theory. A constitutive relation C of a balance system BC is realized as a mapping between a (partial) 1-jet bundle of the configurational bundle π : Y → X and the dual bundle similar to the Legendre mapping of the Lagrangian Field Theory. Invariant (variational) form of the balance system BC is presented in three different forms and the space of admissible variations is defined and studied. Action of automorphisms of the bundle π on the constitutive mappings C is studied and it is shown that the symmetry group Sym(C) of the constitutive relation C acts on the space of solutions of balance system BC . Suitable version of Noether Theorem for an action of a symmetry group is presented with the usage of conventional multimomentum mapping. The ”entropy principle” of Irreducible Thermodynamics requirement that the entropy balance should be the consequence of the balance system is studied for a general balance systems. The structure of corresponding (secondary) balance laws of a balance system BC is studied for the cases of different (partial) 1-jet bundles as domains of a constitutive laws. Corresponding results may be considered as a generalization of the transition to the dual, Lagrange-Liu picture of the Rational Extended Thermodynamics (RET). Finally, the geometrical (bundle) picture of the RET in terms of Lagrange-Liu fields is developed and the entropy principle is shown to be equivalent to the holonomicy of the current component of the constitutive section.

Comparison of entropy generation minimization principle and entransy theory in optimal design of thermal systems
In this study, the relationship among the concepts of entropy generation rate, entransy theory, and generalized thermal resistance to the optimal design of thermal systems is discussed. The equations of entropy and entransy rates are compared and their implications for optimization of conductive heat transfer are analyzed. The theoretical analyses show that based on entropy generation minimizat...

متن کاملStatistical Energy Analysis and the second principle of thermodynamics
Statistical Energy Analysis is a statistical method in vibroacoustics entirely based on the application of energy balance that is the first principle of thermodynamics. In this study, the definition of vibrational entropy is introduced for sub-systems containing energy and modes. The rate of entropy production at interfaces between sub-systems is also derived. Finally, in steady-state condition...
متن کاملThe Entropy Principle from Continuum Mechanics to Hyperbolic Systems of Balance Laws: The Modern Theory of Extended Thermodynamics
We discuss the different roles of the entropy principle in modern thermodynamics. We start with the approach of rational thermodynamics in which the entropy principle becomes a selection rule for physical constitutive equations. Then we discuss the entropy principle for selecting admissible discontinuous weak solutions and to symmetrize general systems of hyperbolic balance laws. A particular a...
متن کاملMultisymplectic formulation of fluid dynamics using the inverse map
We construct multisymplectic formulations of fluid dynamics using the inverse of the Lagrangian path map. This inverse map – the “back-to-labels” map – gives the initial Lagrangian label of the fluid particle that currently occupies each Eulerian position. Explicitly enforcing the condition that the fluid particles carry their labels with the flow in Hamilton’s principle leads to our multisympl...
